Hey LJ users. I appreciate your awesome-ocity in volunteering for this exchange. Some of you are not familiar with Dreamwidth or do not have accounts here. I'm going to attempt to make this slightly easier for you.

First, go to the page you want to post something at, click "Sign in using OpenID".

This will take you to the following screen.

Type in your LJ name like so username.livejournal.com

This is going to take you over to LJ so that you can confirm that you want to give Dreamwidth the right to use your ID over there. You can log in just once or you can give it the right to allow you to sign in from now on using your LJ log in.

Now you need to set and confirm your email. Click "Set"

Type in the email you want to use for notifications and such. (I would recommend using the one you already use for LJ)

Then you'll receive an email in your inbox which you have to click the link to confirm your email address.

That's it. You're set to go. Please let me know if you have any questions.

FYI - Links and images will display as text only as DW has a policy preventing them being displayed as clickable links to prevent spam.

EDIT - You can fix fix the clickable links problem by joining the community. If you join, your links will be fixed retroactively so all of the posts you did in this comm before you joined will also be fixed. :) More info Here and thanks to [personal profile] somnolentblue for the heads up.

Isn't this only a problem for OpenID comments that don't have a verified email address? I thought the way it worked was that OpenID comments are treated by the server as anonymous comments when they don't have a verified email address, but once an email address is given and verified, they're treated the same as comments from registered accounts.

(It's worth putting in an email and verifying it just for the comment notifications, anyway.)

Oh, man! Thank you so much for personally verifying that; I had no idea it still formatted OpenID comments as if they were anonymous regardless of email verification.

Hopefully it isn't a problem for something like this—after all, anon fic memes don't seem to turn anyone off too often—but that seems so odd given the general encouragement to verify is through added benefits.

Isn't that kind of freaking out part of being a thorough mod, though? You're just trying to make sure you can answer everybody's questions if you need to. And it was helpful!

(It also doesn't hurt that this is the best OpenID tutorial I've seen in years. Screenshots!)

Hi!

If the email is validated and the user has joined the community with hir OpenID account, zhe can leave links and embed images at the comm; however, zhe has to join the comm for it to work.

Shiny test case with a new OpenID account. Also, it applies retroactively - if you look at other comments in that thread, you can see where I was poking at it to figure out why it wasn't working for me.

*grins* Glad to be of help!

(It was perfect timing, actually; I needed to check the up-to-dateness of [community profile] spn_bitesized's Guide to OpenID's images and re-create a sample OpenID comment w/ link and image since I merged my lj OpenID w/ my dw acct, but I've been kind of distracted with other things. So, impetus for a shiny new OpenID to see if behavior had changed was of the win!)
